Take it Outside For the Holidays and Beyond

The holidays often mean overcrowded rooms and short tempers. All those people crammed into the living room try to escape by offering so-called ‘help’ in the kitchen. It can fray even the calmest of hosts.

When at all possible, consider taking your holiday event outside. It’s easy to create a holiday-themed party in your own back yard. It’s all about the tone you set, and the venue. Even a small yard can be ideal for holiday entertaining. Some outside holiday themes include celebration of summer, fall harvest, winter wonderland and springtime fun.

Comfort & Safety

If the weather is on the cool side, think comfort. Invest in any number of available outdoor fireplaces to warm the hands (and hearts) of your guests. If the weather is hot, hot, hot, make sure to offer party-goers respite from the sun. Consider your yard’s bug population and plan accordingly.

For evening events year-round, you’ll want to make sure you have appropriate lighting, whether it is temporary or permanent. Those flashing light strings you have in your attic for Christmas holiday decorations can carry you through multiple outdoor holiday celebrations. Your guests want to be able to see each other, the food and any stray landscaping that might trip them up.

Fit Furniture

The outdoor furniture is key to a successful event. To really wow your guests, skip the plastic lawn furniture or rented folding chairs. Invest in solid outdoor furnishings that you won’t be chasing down the street during the next wind gale.

Solid wood, unfinished furniture is particularly suited to outdoor weather conditions. Unlike painted, stained and varnished furniture, the harsh UV rays, cold, heat, rain, snow and other weather conditions enhance rather than ruin unfinished wood furniture. That’s because exposure and time create a patina on unfinished outdoor furniture that has its own natural beauty.

Outside furniture ubiquitous in wicker, bamboo and rattan. For sturdier construction, as with popular Amish chairs like Amish rockers and Amish gliders, look for items built with woods including cedar, oak, ash, pine, acacia and even eucalyptus.
